“I thought I was going to die.”

That’s how one woman described her traumatic ordeal after she and a co-worker were attacked near Ekuvukeni, Wasbank area, last week. The woman, who lives in Durnacol but works in Dundee, has not been named to protect her identity.

The drama unfolded last Wednesday morning while travelling with a co-worker from Ekuvukeni towards Ezakheni when two men opened fire on their vehicle.

“I remember seeing two men in the road. They both looked drunk, but before I could say anything to my colleague, who was driving, they started shooting at us.” While the man driving the vehicle was unharmed, one of the bullets hit the woman as she was attempting to duck out of the way. The bullet split into three parts, lodging itself in her scalp.

“I just saw blood all over me and I heard my brain make a funny noise when I got hit. I thought it was the end and immediately started to pray, asking God to be with me during that time.”

The driver sped away, knowing that they needed urgent medical assistance. Thankfully, they came across an accident scene along the road, where traffic officers were present.

The officers rushed the woman to La Verna Hospital in Ladysmith, where she was seen to and patched up before being transported back to Dundee Hospital for the bullet to be removed. “I am eternally grateful to Leandra Fourie and Traffic Officers Madonsela and Mtshali for going out of their way to get me to hospital and save my life. I am also thankful to Dr Hilliar, who treated me once I arrived back in Dundee.

“Since her traumatic ordeal, the woman admits that she still sees the men standing before her, shooting, whenever she closes her eyes.

“I have a lot of pain and I am too scared to leave the house in fear that it will happen again, but God is good all the time and I will always be thankful that He protected me during the ordeal.”

She urges people to stay away from the area in question, as it has become a dangerous crime hot-spot where motorists are becoming easy targets.
