NEWCASTLE KZN: Teen hacked to death in Osizweni, 7 arrested

On Sunday (April 18) a group of armed men is believed to have attacked a 19-year-old in Blaauwbosch.

A multi-disciplinary team of police officers have worked tirelessly around the clock, to arrest the suspects involved in the brutal murder of Mcebisi Rawulani (19).

According to Brigadier Jay Naicker from the SAPS Office of the Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, an operation took place in Osizweni on April 18.

“A 19-year-old man was hacked to death in the early hours of the morning. Following a rigorous investigation, the suspects were traced to a house in Blaauwbosch,” confirmed Brig Naicker.

He revealed that seven suspects, aged between 17 and 22, were arrested on charges of murder, assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, possession of dangerous weapons and the illegal possession of both a firearm and ammunition.

“One of the suspects was found in illegal possession of a firearm, while the others were found in possession of dangerous weapons. More arrests can be expects, as the investigation is still ongoing,” he said.

The circumstances surrounding the murder

Brig Naicker confirmed that on April 18 (Sunday) a group of armed men attacked Mcebisi Rawulani at Blaauwbosch in Osizweni.

“It is alleged the victim was on the way home with a group of youth when they were attacked by another group. The victim, who was stabbed and hacked with bush knives, was declared dead at the scene while his friends were able to escape. The suspects will appear before the Madadeni Magistrates Court.”

KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi welcomed the arrests and commended police officers from Osizweni for ‘acting decisively’.

“This area has been plagued by violence committed by armed youths in the area who have formed gangs. The arrests are welcomed and we hope this will stem the tide of violence in the area,” concluded Lt General Mkhwanazi.
