Ladysmith KZN: Landing ‘monster’ catches at Spioenkop Dam

With his first bite, he landed a whopper of a bream which weighed in at 1kg

Sean Cilliers (15) recently went out to Spioenkop Dam to have a great day with family and friends. The purpose of the day was not only to do some fishing, but for relaxation on the banks of the dam.

Young Sean cast in his lines, thinking it would be one of those boring days without any bites, but, boy oh boy, was he wrong! With his first bite, he landed a whopper of a bream which weighed in at 1kg on the dot.

That really got the blood pumping!

The bait that was doing the trick and driving the fish crazy was live earthworms.

Sean managed to catch an amazing number of bream on the day, totalling 30.

His catches all weighed 500g and above. It was definitely a great day with so many fish caught! Speaking to Sean, he says this doesn’t happen often, as people normally only catch palm-sized bream or tilapia, and no bigger.

Sean is looking forward to the next day out on the water with his family, and hopes he can bag many more great catches and have another memorable day at the dam.

Not only does Sean enjoy fishing for bream and tilapia, but he also loves getting in on the bass fishing action with his dad, Fanie.
