NEWCASTLE KZN: Government warns residents to use water sparingly

Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam shows a small increase in water levels from last week.

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has reiterated its commitment to working closely with municipalities in the KwaZulu-Natal province to ensure water supply in water-stressed areas.

According to DWS Spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau the provincial water storage remains ‘considerably stable’ this week (at 73.2% compared to last week’s 73.4%).

“DWS is closely monitoring the status of water levels in the province, while also continuing to implement measures to augment water in communities affected by inconsistent water supply,” confirmed Ratau.

This, he added, comes after one of the biggest dams in the province (Albert-Falls Dam) showed a slight increase from last week’s 54.7% to 55.1% – at this time last year, this Dam stood at a below-average of 36.8%.

“Dams in the Umgeni Water Supply System have also recorded a minimal increase, whereas some, such as Midmar and Inanda Dams have declined.”

Ratau mentioned that although most of the province’s dams are ‘considerably looking good’, DWS acknowledges there are some municipalities facing water scarcity challenges.

“One such is the Ugu District Municipality, which has in the past led to public service delivery protests. We continue to work with the provincial and local government to ensure water issues are resolved.”

Some of the immediate interventions, he revealed, include the exploration of groundwater systems to augment the inadequate bulk capacity in the district, together with the supply of water on a rotational basis.

“We are urging residents to use water sparingly as we anticipate extreme weather patterns during the upcoming winter season, which may adversely impact on the country’s dams significantly,” concluded Ratau.
