VRYHEID KZN: Urgent plea to donate, as blood supply is critically low

The SANBS will be at Pick 'n Pay from 9am until 1pm on April 17

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has issued a statement pleading with South Africans to urgently donate blood. “Our national blood supply is currently at just 2.4 days’ Group O stock, amounting to just over 2113 units of O blood available around the country; while in KZN, the blood supply is on 1.5 days’ Group O,” says SANBS regional marketing manager Sifiso Khoza. He continued by saying that the situation is critical. He is pleading with active donors, lapsed donors and potential donors to please donate. The SANBS is also requesting venues for blood drives, which are easily available and accessible to the public. One unit of blood can save up to three lives; and donating only takes 30 minutes, four times a year. To become a blood donor, you must: – Be between the ages of 16 and 75 years old; – Weigh 50kg or more; – Be in good health and lead a healthy lifestyle; – Consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient; – Commit to donating blood regularly. The SANBS will be at Pick ‘n Pay from 9am until 1pm on April 17.
