VRYHEID KZN: Kayla dreams of the performing arts

She is a soon-to-be eight-year-old, but she has dreams bigger than any other young girl could ever imagine. Kayla Goosen is a versatile young lady who is doing Public Speaking at Lucas Meyer Primary School, where she will compete in the ATKV competition. Not only does she have the confidence to speak in public, but she is also an upcoming performing dancer who has her very own solo dance choreographed by Marina de Beer. Kayla has been dancing at Stepping Out Dance Academy since 2016; she started dancing in the Tiny Tots Dance Programme at Karnallie Pre-School. She enjoys Modern, Jazz, Lyrical and Acrobatics dancing, and Marina is certain that she will join the Hip Hop classes too, if given the opportunity. Her passion for performing is never-ending. Kayla is a real leader in the dance classes as well, always helping other students to better themselves. Kayla has performed publicly on stage a few times and has also attended a few dance workshops over the past five years. Kayla’s mother, Sonja Goosen, was browsing on Facebook when she stumbled upon a competition called FotoFokus, where her daughter would have the opportunity to dance and perform with Afrikaans singer Charlize Berg in one of her music videos. Sonja submitted Kayla’s photo, and Kayla was selected among the top 95 out of 11,000 entries. On Saturday (April 10), Sonja received a phone call from an agent from MENTOR MY, who is also affiliated with the competition, and they offered Kayla a partial scholarship for a course facilitated by actress Desiré Gardner. During this course, Kayla will learn the ‘ins and outs’ of the performing arts in the television, theatre and film industry. To enable Kayla to do the course and have the opportunity to step into the performing arts industry, she needs sponsors or financial donations to the value of R6650 before April 23. She is currently at number six but needs to be in the top four to be part of the video. Kayla is the only girl from this region in this competition.
