DUNDEE KZN: Bright artist Jared plans to add colour to our world

". I believe Dundee has the opportunity to become the first town in this northern region to put in place such an art plan."

Vibrant and colourful! That’s how 21-year-old freelance mural artist Jared Maistry sees Endumeni in the years to come. Jared, who is self-trained, has been travelling around the country for two years, transforming dull urban concrete walls into bursts of colour, which he says creates a positive spirit within town or city centres.

Jared, who finished school at Dundee Secondary, said he has been commissioned to complete works of art in Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and Pomeroy, among other areas, and now wants to bring his talent to Dundee. “From my travels, I have discovered that many towns are using murals in order to brighten up their areas and attract visitors. I believe Dundee has the opportunity to become the first town in this northern region to put in place such an art plan.”

Using spray paints, a creative eye and in some cases a head for heights, Jared wants to partner with the municipality and Tourism Dundee to look at places, unused walls and abandoned buildings where his art can be used to give visitors a colourful surprise.

He is open to suggestions as to what he will paint. “Companies have asked me for a specific design which I implement. But perhaps here we can look at ways to promote the culture of the area in terms of the battlefields and Zulu culture and traditions.” Jared can be contacted on 073-455-9117.
