NEWCASTLE KZN: Easter weekend claims multiple lives and leaves several injured

The exact cause of these collisions is unknown, and police investigations will continue.

At least three people have been confirmed dead, with several others injured, following a series of collisions reported over the Easter weekend.

According to an official source, between Friday (April 2) and Monday (April 5) emergency personnel responded to a number of collisions in and around Newcastle.

“Three people were killed and two others were seriously injured in a collision on Boundary Road,” confirmed the source, adding that paramedics rushed the two injured patients to hospital, where they were admitted to the ICU for further medical care.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, confirmed that Newcastle Police were investigating a case of culpable homicide, after a vehicle overturned at around 12pm on April 4 on Boundary Road, but could only confirm two of the deaths.

“Officers attended an accident scene where a H100 Hyundai truck had overturned. Two people died on scene and the others were treated at the scene and taken to hospital.” she said.

In addition, serious accidents were reported at the Drakensberg and Allen Street intersection, as well as on the N11 and the Majuba Pass, leaving several people with minor, moderate, and serious injuries.

Arumugam also reported two more collisions that allegedly occurred in Barry Hertzog Park and on the N11 over the weekend, resulting in a total of four deaths.

At this time, the exact cause of these collisions is unknown, and police investigations will continue.

The Newcastle Advertiser extends its condolences to family and friends of the deceased.
