NEWCASTLE KZN: Two suspects sentenced to life in prison for murder of Ladysmith businessman

Both suspects were sentenced to 55 years in prison in the Newcastle Regional Court on March 15.

Haroon Warasally, a Ladysmith businessman and owner of Pelikan Security Services, was visiting his guards and paying salaries when he was brutally murdered by two of his employees on June 2, 2016.

According to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, to dispose of the body and evidence, the suspects set fire to Warasally’s body.

One suspect was arrested the day after the incident by Newcastle and Ladysmith detectives.

“The second suspect was apprehended in November 2017 after Investigating Officer Detective Warrant Officer V.R. Ganesh conducted an intensive search for him.”

Both suspects were sentenced to 55 years in prison in Newcastle Regional Court on March 15, 2021.

The sentences were as follows:
Count 1: Murder – 25 Years (life sentence)
Count 2: Robbery with Aggravating Circumstances – 15 years
Count 3: Defeating the Administration Justice – 15 years.

The Newcastle Detective Commander, Colonel JJ Kubheka, thanked Detective Warrant Officer VR Ganesh for his diligence and in-depth investigation, which culminated in an excellent conviction.
