GLENCOE KZN: Sarel Cilliers’s school library starts a new chapter

'A dusty tomb of silence and old unread books' is definitely not the description that comes to mind when one visits the Sarel Cilliers library;

Sarel Cilliers’ school library has had a recent re-vamp under the new management of Mrs van Zyl and her assistants.

The library initiated a reading week before the long weekend, and the students who visited the library and checked out books were unexpectedly rewarded with chocolate Easter eggs. The school recently invested a considerable amount of money in the library and purchased new books, most of which had already been checked out only days after being put on the shelves.

The library prefects continue to monitor visitor numbers, and the library is a busy place of concentrated activity at break times.

As an important resource for the school, we are very proud to be able to offer this facility to our students. Current initiatives have included having a competition open to the Grade 8s, where learners were asked to design bookmarks. T

here is an award every year for the student who has checked out the most reading books. Being a media prefect is a honour that many students in Grade 11 aspire to. Mrs van Zyl and her assistants keep the library an interesting place of learning by constantly arranging new displays and offering assistance with school research projects.

A well-kept secret is also the fact that the library offers the resource of all previous exam papers, as well as a photocopy service and Internet access.

‘A dusty tomb of silence and old unread books’ is definitely not the description that comes to mind when one visits the Sarel Cilliers library; rather it is a hive of activity and eager learners in pursuit of knowledge and learning.
