VRYHEID KZN: Foundation helps grade 12 learners with career advice

he Zakhele Foundation is an organisation that focuses on Grade 12 learners in terms of developing their careers after matric.
On Saturday, the foundation visited one of the schools in the rural areas to give out career guidance to the matric learners. “My colleague, Mr SH Dlamini, and I arrived on Saturday at Ngali High School and fortunately we found the principal, Mr Ndlovu, and the Grade 12 learners attending Mathematics and Maths Literacy. We had a moment with them to share a few tips on career development,” said Zakhele.
He mentioned that they had main points to share with the learners; the first one being the importance of having an email address in this day and age. “We stressed the issue of them having their own personal email account and we discovered that only a few learners had email addresses. Yes, there might be someone at home who can help them use their email address when they are applying, but we encourage them to have their own active personal email address.” The second point Zakhele elaborated on is that learners should have a ‘MyNSFAS Account’, where they can apply for an NSFAS bursary to study at a tertiary institution, and also help students complete their application and manage their important information. Zakhele went on to talk about the importance of online storage: “Learners should have an app where they are able to store their important documents. If something happens to your tangible documents, at least you will have them stored somewhere, plus now there is this fourth industrial revolution. It is also crucial that learners open a bank account and have an online banking app for their funds.”
Zakhele emphasised that learners should make sure they apply to tertiary institutions on time, and they shouldn’t think that TVET colleges are for poor-performing learners. “If it happens that you are not accepted at the 26 universities we have, then one can enroll at a TVET college. Also, learners should ensure that they apply for accommodation – a learner should know whether they will be residing on campus or off campus after being accepted. I also urge all learners to apply for NSFAS. Yes, parents sometimes don’t have enough money, but NSFAS can assist with the funds.”
