VRYHEID KZN: Busy yet exciting first term at Nardini Convent School

Our first term ends on March 31. We look forward to our Golf Day next term, which will be on June 5

The second variant of Covid-19 prevented the country from beginning the school year as scheduled, but this did not prevent us from teaching and learning. Credit goes to the parents for providing access to devices for online teaching, and to the teachers for creating interesting and informative online lessons for our learners. Contact lessons resumed on February 8, thus introducing a new teacher (Miss E d’Oliveira – Grade 3) to our school environment, and meeting the teachers and learners face to face. Contact lessons allowed us to celebrate Valentine’s Day at school. In keeping with the spirit of Valentine’s Day, the boys and girls arrived in their finest red-and-white outfits. Audiologists from Dr Ndlovu’s rooms paid a visit to our Grade 1s to test their hearing, free of charge. The Grade 7 boys were also visited by Northwood Boys High School (a school in Durban) to promote their school. They have been impressed with the behaviour and academic performance of ex-Nardini learners who are currently enrolled at their school. Once President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that our country could move to Level 1, our monitors had the opportunity to go on their leadership course to Elandsheim Retreat Camp. The leadership camp was successful, evidenced by the exuberant attitude of the monitors on their return to school. The skills that were acquired by the monitors helped them set the tone for good behaviour to the younger learners. Our school gala ended term 1 on a high note. Despite the masks and social distancing, spirits were high and excitement was felt both in and out of the water.

Competition was tough making, with Michael ‘House’ emerging victorious. The Smit Floating Trophy for Best Junior Girl Swimmer went to Lisa Musakwa.

The Pacific Pools Trophy for Most Improved Boy Swimmer went to Samkelo Gwala and the Van Aswegen Trophy for Most Improved Girl Swimmer was won by Amenathi Langeni. Francis ‘House’ won the Engel Trophy for Senior Relay.

Aphelele Mtshali won the Carmen Els Trophy for Senior Girls’ Individual Medley and also won the Hayley & Taryn Smith Trophy as Victrix Ludorum 2021.

Anathi Cele won the France Brotherton Trophy for Individual Medley and the Banks Trophy for ‘Swimmer of the Day’, thus making him Victor Ludorum for 2021 to win the Harle Trophy.

Our first term ends on March 31. We look forward to our Golf Day next term, which will be on June 5.
