NEWCASTLE KZN: Mayor hopes roadblock will reduce Easter carnage [WATCH]

At the roadblock, vehicle licences were checked and random searches were conducted.

Mayor of Newcastle, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba hopes a collective effort will reduce road deaths and collisions over the upcoming Easter holidays.

Representatives of Newcastle Council and municipal Community Safety were joined by SAPS, the Road Traffic Inspectorate, emergency medical operators and the Department of Transport this morning, at the launch of an Easter Weekend Road Safety campaign on Allen Street near the N11 intersection.

During the roadblock, officials stopped vehicles to check for expired licences, conducted random searches for any illicit items and also appealed to motorists to be safe and responsible this Easter.

“We must honour the President’s [Cyril Ramaphosa] message and keep our roads safe,” added Cllr Mahlaba.
