Ladysmith KZN: The Joker Draw has been won

The Boardman Bros Club Championships are being held on the weekend of April 9, 10 and 11

The Joker has been won, with Marlo De Franca turning over the lucky card on Friday night and walking away with the ‘pot’. So we go back to the original R5000 jackpot. But that’s still a good enough reason to come to the club on Friday for a meal and the Joker.

Last Saturday was a Four-Ball Better-Ball competition. The combination of Wynand and Cameron Wessels won on 40 points, beating Leon Petersen and ‘Leprechaun’ Hanlon on a count-out. Nearest the pins went to: Gerald Boardman – 3rd, Wynand Wessels – 8th, Adil Singh – 11th and Cameron Wessels – 12th. There were two ‘two-clubs’: Murray Hume and Gerald Boardman.

This being the Easter weekend, there will be a Better-Ball competition with meat hamper prizes and a lucky draw of R500. To win the lucky draw, you need to be at prize-giving.

Monday (April 5) is an IPS competition and lists are on the board. If you are staying in Ladysmith for the weekend, get up to the club and play some golf. The Par 3 course is proving to be quite successful and we have been approached to make it 18 holes. This will be discussed at the golf meeting. Watch the Gazette for updates.

The Boardman Bros Club Championships are being held next weekend (April 9, 10 and 11). There is a Par 3 competition on the Friday afternoon, followed by the Auction on Friday night. Golfers and their spouses will be served curry & rice. Should anyone not playing wish to stay for the Auction, the curry & rice dinner will be available at R55 a plate.

Saturday is the Seniors, which is probably the biggest division of all, plus the first 18 holes of the Stroke-play, and then Sunday is the final day of the championships.

This week’s expressions:

Dawn patrol – Golfers who are the first to play each day, so named because they start their match around the course at sunrise. (We all know who they are!).

Dribbler – A shot that travels only a few feet, usually without getting airborne.

Elephant burial ground – Collective term for the huge mounds found on the greens of certain golf courses, where good scores often go to die.

Elephant’s ass – A poorly-struck shot that is “high and stinky”. Usually applied to a popped-up drive that is higher than it is long. An elephant’s ass might also prompt a comment such as, “Except for distance and direction, that was a good shot.”

Fan – To miss the ball completely. The air moves, but nothing else does.

This week’s quote: Life is like a camera, Just FOCUS on what is important, CAPTURE the good times, and DEVELOP from the negatives. If things don’t work out, take another shot.

If travelling on the Easter Weekend, travel safe.
