GLENCOE KZN: Sarel Cilliers athletes shrug off lockdown blues at athletics champs

Blue Lions “Never Surrender”, even in difficult times.

Two of Sarel Cilliers top athletes represented Umzinyathi District at the KZN Athletics Age Group and Senior Championships held at King’s Park Stadium, Durban over the weekend.

Both boys excelled in their respective disciplines, making us proud of their achievements and sportsmanship. Mongezi Langa, Grade 11, was the star of the day and performed extremely well in both of his disciplines, wining Gold in the High Jump, jumping to an astounding height of 1.95m. Mongezi then went on to achieve a first in the Javelin, bringing home a second Gold medal.

Bandile Mdluli, Grade 12, sprinted out of the blocks in a very strong field of runners to achieve a well-deserved Bronze Medal in the finals of the 100m, then repeating the performance to win a second Bronze Medal in the 200m finals. With training schedules curtailed due to Covid-19 regulations, these superb achievements show the dedication and perseverance of these two outstanding athletes.

Congratulations boys, you made us proud and showed that Blue Lions “Never Surrender”, even in difficult times. Sarel Cilliers recently held a long-awaited Awards Ceremony to honour the top achievers of the previous year, 2020. Covid-19 protocols were followed, with a limited guest list.
