DUNDEE KZN: Man scammed out of R6000 after bank card theft

He is now battling to make ends meet

A man has been left with a zero bank balance after over R6000 was withdrawn from his account following a bank card cloning or card theft incident at the Standard Bank ATM at the Dundee Boulevard Centre.

He told the Courier he was at the ATM on Saturday morning and noticed a man standing near him.  This man said there is a ‘new system at the ATM’ and started to help the victim who was under the impression the man was an official from the Centre.

When his card did not come  out of the ATM, he wondered what was going on and realised that the two men had disappeared. Ten minutes after this he received a SMS on his phone that R5000 had been withdrawn from the Standard Bank ATM at Jeff’s Service Station and later another message, informing him that another R1250 had been at another ATM.

He immediately contacted the Standard Bank hotline and a case of fraud was opened.  He believes his bank card had been somehow stolen by the men who had been tricked into giving out his PIN number as he thought the man was an official. He is now battling to pay monthly bills while he waits for the bank to revert to him.
