WEENEN KZN: Death toll climbs after high waters engulf taxi

"The disaster management teams are still trying to locate the two people who are still missing"

The death toll after a taxi was swept away by raging water in the Mngwenya River on Saturday (March 27) now stands at four.

The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) confirmed this afternoon (March 29) that one more body had been recovered while two more people were still unaccounted for.

“The bodies that have been recovered are those of Sazi Chonco and Zama Ziqubu. The disaster management teams are still trying to locate the two people who are still missing – Nompilo Ziqubu and Nomonde Mkhize,” said Cogta MEC Sipho Hlomuka.

He added that the teams have been working “round the clock to locate the missing people” and advised residents to exercise extreme caution when crossing flooded walkways and bridges.
