Ladysmith KZN: Anger over hazardous open manhole

uThukela say they are trying to replace all stolen manhole covers

A huge gaping manhole at the corner of Francis and Harrismith Road has motorists and pedestrians up in arms.

A local resident claims it poses a very real danger to pedestrians, not to mention the damage it can do to vehicles.

The other day, the resident and his son were taking an afternoon stroll and his son almost fell into the hole. He is now angry that this dangerous manhole is just left open, with no urgency in carrying out road repairs.

He said, “My son could have gotten injured and I would have had to pay the bills.”

uThukela communications manager Jabulani Mkhonza commented that manhole covers are being stolen or vandalised, which makes their job more difficult.

The district municipality is currently trying to replace all stolen covers to the best of their ability.
