DUNDEE KZN: Rain, floods and no power… and hardly any roads

57mm of rain was measured over two days

Many parts of Dundee were left without electricity yesterday. In the morning, the Mpati area suffered an outage after a cable fault and in the evening, the lower parts of town were left in darkness.

It is not clear if the fault was caused by the ongoing trench digging that caused widespread unhappiness in the town as a contractor and various sub contractors go about laying fibre optic cabling throughout Endumeni. Spokesman, identified as Wiehahn of Britelink, the company responsible, said they wanted to accommodate all concerns and added that the company was committed to swiftly fixing any problems.

Yesterday the company acted promptly when business people near the Gladstone Street traffic circle complained of concrete slabs and other debris being left piled up, causing an obstacle to pedestrians.

He indicated that the work should be completed in about two months.  For details residents can call Britelink at Tel: 010 900 3356 | Info info@britelink.co.za

Residents’ woes have been compounded by the ongoing water cuts, despite the good summer rains, caused by the inability of the outdated Biggarsberg Water Treatment Plant to process enough water to meet the needs of the area.

The plant has not been upgraded for 25 years, sources said, during which time ‘ hundreds of mainly RDP homes have been built and the population mushroomed’.

The heavy rain of yesterday and Wednesday evening has also caused the further deterioration of many roads.

57mm of rain was measured in Dundee over the past two days,  leaving the Watt Road bridge in Forrestdale under water.
