VRYHEID KZN: Victory Primary enjoys a morning with firefighters

Afterwards, they were granted the opportunity to have a quick walk through the fire engine

The AbaQulusi Municipal Fire & Rescue Department gave a fire demonstration to the learners at Victory Primary School on Friday. The learners were like little sponges as they observed all the valuable and interesting information. Station Commander Vikani Madela says: “We are very happy to teach children about fire-fighting. We want to teach them about fires and that they shouldn’t play with matches, stoves and the fire itself. If parents are not around, they shouldn’t leave their kids locked inside the house. When the house is burning, they should drop & roll to avoid smoke inhalation, and not stand up. We want to give them these tips to use at home.” The team that presented the demonstration comprised Themba Sithole, Ayanda Zulu, Njabulo Fakude and Bonisiwe Zondo, who taught the learners about life-saving gear which is used during the outbreak of a fire or rescue; for example the ‘jaws of life’, protective wear and the function of the fire engine, to name but a few. Each learner had the opportunity to hold the fire hose and pretend to be a firefighter. Afterwards, they were granted the opportunity to have a quick walk through the fire engine. Questions were then asked and the children who gave the correct answers were rewarded with a small treat from the tuck shop.
