VRYHEID KZN: AbaQulusi wins ‘Greenest Rural Municipality’ award

The plan to utilise this amount is strictly going to be for the betterment of our environment

The municipality is proud to inform its citizens that it has received the ‘Greenest Rural Municipality’ award from the National Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF). The award came with an amount of R800,000, which the municipality will be utilising to further improve the landfill site. “This is positive news for the municipality, even though we are still not at the stage we really want to be in terms of greening our municipality, but this award is a little pat on the back to say that we are on the right track,” said Municipal Manager Bonga Ntanzi.

The plan to utilise this amount is strictly going to be for the betterment of our environment.

“We have submitted a business plan to the department to clarify how exactly we are going to spend the money. Our core plan is to expand the landfill by having a waste-sorting facility and the establishment of a buy-back centre for informal recyclers. “Our purpose is to ensure that we improve the socio-economic activity in our municipality by establishing the buy-back centre for informal recyclers and improving the condition of the landfill site,” said Ntanzi.

The competition looks at a number of core elements, which are waste management, energy efficiency and conservation, water management, landscaping, tree planting and beautification, as well as leadership and institutional arrangements.

*Moreover, we have attached a list of refuse collection days for our citizens and we request the community to adhere to it. This is to avoid having refuse lying on the streets when it will only be collected three days later; therefore, we appeal to our communities to only take out refuse on the morning of the collection. The service provider has been directed to collect refuse regardless of the weather or holidays, and has been supplied with a list of days for collection.
