Local snake expert Fanie Cilliers has been kept on his toes when it comes to snake calls in and around town. Most of us wouldn’t want snakes to get too close to our toes, but what if one is curled up inside your shoe, of all places?
Speaking to Fanie, with the above scenario in mind, he explained a recent case he had to attend to…
“Well, you know with this heat and all the rain we have been having, I have been receiving numerous calls regarding snakes inside people’s homes. This particular story started when a family realised that their shoes were moving around like they were bewitched! Upon investigating, they spotted an ‘ugly looking thing’ inside the shoe and without delay, they contacted me immediately.”
When Fanie received the call, he was expecting a short snake or even a 1000-leg inside a shoe, but boy-oh-boy was he wrong. When Fanie looked into the shoe, he saw it was a Mozambique Spitting Cobra! He certainly did not expect it to be a monster of that size!
Fanie added, “I grabbed the snake and then it unravelled like a zincky spring, folding out before my eyes and it just got bigger and bigger. After a few spits and swear words, I necked the beast and was utterly astonished that a snake of that size could squeeze into a size 7 shoe!
“That’s why, over and over again, I tell people to always check their shoes, as you never know what could be hiding in them.”
