Ladysmith KZN: Cricket kicks off after a year of inaction due to Covid-19

The players said it was a good game and a great feeling to be out in the middle again after so long

With Covid-19 crippling sport last year, there has been no cricket action in town since the lockdown started on March 27, 2020.

That all changed last weekend, with local cricket kicking off in the form of a friendly match on Sunday morning (March 14) at Settlers Park.

For something fresh and interesting, players from the different teams in the Northern District Cricket Union (NDCU) were pooled to make an NDCU 1 and NDCU 2 team to take each other on.

The match was aimed at getting the players used to action on the pitch after not playing for over a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The players desperately wanted to shake off the cobwebs and also test out the pitch at the ground to see how it’s playing.

NDCU 1 batted first and made ‘triple Nelson’ (111) in 20 overs before being bowled out.

NDCU 2 then went in to chase down the total, and it was exciting stuff indeed. The game went down to the wire in the final over, needing six runs to win from six balls.

NDCU 2 just weren’t up to the task and fell short by a few runs to lose the nail-biter.

Speaking to the players, they said the game was good and it was a great feeling to be out in the middle after so long. Now they can’t wait for the season to officially kick off!
