NEWCASTLE KZN: Aunty Barbie knits lockdown blues away

Despite more than a year of lockdown, Aunty Barbie remains upbeat and encouraging.

Newcastle matriarch, Persman Ramsaroop (Aunty Barbie) is using handiwork to keep her spirits up, and believes her fellow elderly residents should also find ways to keep themselves occupied instead of wallowing in lockdown isolation.

After Covid-19 halted many activities of local organisations, the 89-year-old refused to let her spirits be dampened.

Instead, Aunty Barbie has knitted and crocheted beanies, bed socks, tablecloths, handbags, neck warmers, and even pot plant holders – and is encouraging others to use their own skills to fight off depression.

For more of Aunty Barbie’s sage advice, read this week’s edition of the Newcastle Advertiser, on shelves today (March 18).
