DUNDEE KZN: Legendary ‘Charlie’ Adalis passes on

His contribution to the district will never be forgotten

Legendary Dundee businessman, Stavros ‘Charlie’ Adalis (85), passed away this afternoon. He had not been well for some months.

Upon his retirement from active business in 2015, Mr Adalis told the Courier that he left Greece for South Africa in 1964 and in 1965 opened C’est Si Bon Café in Glencoe. Business was in his blood and he continued to open and run businesses.

Who remembers the Glencoe Book and Jewellery Store in the old Sanlam Centre, Glencoe? Then there was Sundown Café in Dundee, Rhodene Dry Cleaners, Victoria Tea Room, Ntokoza Eating House at the taxi rank, Charlies Spar –  where of course his legacy will remain – and over 30 years ago he opened Nobungani Build It Hardware.

Mr Adalis suffered the pain of losing his son, George, last year. He will be fondly remembered for his massive contribution to the district. Deepest condolences to the family.

The family has announced that a memorial service for Charlie will be held at later date.
