Ladysmith KZN: Awards to honour last year’s matriculants

A small ceremony was held in line with Covid-19 regulations, with less than 50 people in attendance at the Town Hall’s Council Chamber

Alfred Duma Local Municipality recently hosted an awards ceremony to honour the top 10 highest-achieving Grade 12 learners of 2020.

The matriculants of 2020, most of whom have already left for varsity, performed well under the cloud of the Covid-19 pandemic and its dynamics. Mayor Vincent Madlala and the Municipal Council rewarded their efforts during a small ceremony that was held in line with Covid-19 regulations, with less than 50 people in attendance at the Town Hall’s Council Chamber.

Addressing the gathering, Cllr Madlala spoke of how he, as the mayor, and everyone from teachers to principals and parents were extremely proud of the achievements of the ‘Class of 2020’.

“We were faced with a disastrous pandemic that changed our lives and had us locked up in our homes for months. But despite all those challenges, the matric class of 2020 managed to pass and achieve great results,” said the mayor.

He also touched on a point he emphasises annually, ie students should remember their hometown and not forget to encourage others to do just as well as they have done.

The top 10 achievers each received certificates, trophy tokens, as well as tablets to assist them in their studies.

The number one learner received a laptop.
