Ladysmith KZN: Issue of unfinished RDP houses leaves residents fuming

All of the RDP houses in the area do not have doors and windows

Residents of Umbulwane Area H are fuming after contractors left all their RDP houses incomplete. It’s been more than three years now and all of the RDP houses in the area still do not have doors and windows.

A Ladysmith Gazette reporter visited the area to meet up with the beneficiaries of the RDP houses, who said they thought that by now they’d be the owners of ‘proper accommodation’.

“This project was started in 2017 and we thought the houses were going to be finished very soon, as election time was also nearby. But to date, the houses are still incomplete, as they do not have doors and windows, and some only have slabs. The worst part is that our ward councillor does not engage with us on this matter.

“Thieves are now using these houses as their hiding spots; they rob community members and then hide in these structures,” said an angry beneficiary who would like to remain anonymous.

The Gazette reporter also visited the Ward 1 area of Ezakheni, where residents have a similar problem. RDP houses started going up in November 2014, but are still incomplete in 2021, as they do not have roofing, windows and doors.

All attempts to get comment from Alfred Duma Local Municipality spokesperson Siyabonga Maphalala were in vain, as he has not responded to the emails sent to him.
