NEWCASTLE KZN: Local Post Office branches open despite nationwide closures

Doors at the two main Post Office branches in Newcastle are currently open.

While Newcastle does not appear to be directly affected by the closure of South African Postal Service (SAPO) branches yet, residents remain dissatisfied.

The Citizen reports SAPO employees were locked out of premises across the country this week, due to the postal service failing to pay rent at many of its branches. Many employees were said to have been ‘kept in the dark’ about SAPO’s financial situation.

While Newcastle’s two main SAPO branches are currently said to be open for business, numerous residents have contacted the Newcastle Advertiser to express frustration at services being offline recently.

SAPO employees have admitted the power was cut at local branches in February but confirm the lights have since been switched on again. Full services have been restored as a result.

The Newcastle Advertiser has contacted SAPO officials for clarity on the situation and a formal response is awaited.
