VRYHEID KZN: Challenging year, but VHS matrics up to the challenge

I started off my year with a lot of doubt, and my greatest fear was that I was going to be a failure at the end of the year

The year 2020 was a year like no other. The class of 2020 had a year that no other class before them can testify to. Uncertainty was the order of the day, with doubt and fear hanging like a dark cloud over all Grade 12s. However, we are proud to say that the VHS class of 2020 put all that aside and took on the task at hand. Vryheid High School had a total of 157 candidates who wrote their NCS exams, achieving an overall pass rate of 87.8%, with a total of 118 subject distinctions and 63% passing with a Bachelor’s. The following subjects had an average of 60% and higher: ENGFA, ZULFA, ACCN, LIFE and TRSM. AFRHL, ENGFAL, ZULFA, HOSP, TRSM, GRMSA and LIFE boasted with a 100% pass rate.

Vryheid High’s top achievers are as follows:

Nomonde Miya – five A’s and two B’s, with an average of 82.86%.

Kyle Crous – five A’s and one B, with an average of 81.50%.

Minenhle July – four A’s and three B’s, with an average of 81%.

Silindokuhle Ntuli – five A’s, one B and one C, with an average of 80.57%.

Michelle Meier – five A’s and two B’s, with an average of 80.43%.

Amkele Nkambule – five A’s, one B and one C, with an average of 80.43%.

The VHS 2020 Dux learner is Medinah Khan with seven A’s, as follows: ENGHL – 90%; AFRFA – 84%; MATH – 83%; LIFE – 92%; PHSC – 82%; LFSC – 87%; ACCN – 89%; and an average of 86.71%. A more-than-worthy candidate to end off our article! In the words of our 2020 Dux: “I started off my year with a lot of doubt, and my greatest fear was that I was going to be a failure at the end of the year. When Covid-19 hit, it only intensified my fears. I soon realised that I couldn’t let the fear of failure be the reason I worked hard; I had to be brave enough to let my need for success be that reason. I encourage you to do the same – set goals for yourself and do everything you can to achieve them. So here is the secret to matric: make your goals bigger than your fears and then give it everything you’ve got. We cannot change the reality of the situation, but we can change our attitudes towards it. I urge you to be courageous. Be courageous enough to take on every challenge on your path. As Winston Churchill once said, ‘Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts’.”
