Vryheid KZN: School celebrates world read aloud day

"A reading nation is a winning nation,"

World Read Aloud Day is celebrated around the world on February 3. It is a day on which people are challenged to grab a book, magazine or newspaper and read something out loud. Harpo Primary School celebrated World Read Aloud Day last week Thursday, when the learners were encouraged to read and told about the importance of reading. It was a joyful, fun and rainy day for the kids, as they gathered inside a tent on the school playground to be told about the many benefits of reading. After warmly welcoming everyone, school principal Mrs Masombuka urged the learners to read every day and fall in love with reading. “A reading nation is a winning nation,” she said. Despite the inclement weather conditions, the children were chipper and cheerful; a lot of singing and dancing took place during the programme. Ma’am Zulu shared the purpose of the day by saying, ”The main purpose of celebrating World Read Aloud Day is to promote reading from a young age. A nation that does not read does not win. We, as Harpo Primary School, say ‘NO’ to illiteracy.” She challenged parents at home to lead by example: “Parents must read to their kids at home and as a parent, you should encourage your child to read on their own too.” She continued by sharing the benefits of reading with the learners, who all listened attentively. She said that when you read, you absorb valuable information; you always have stories to share with your friends; you never get bored; reading develops your vocabulary; and lastly, reading creates a bond between a parent, educator and child. Learners in Grade 6 took the stage to read out loud in front of the educators and other learners. Zamokuhle Hlatshwayo was the first learner to read out loud in English, while Amahle Sithole read in IsiZulu and Courtney Pillay read in Afrikaans.
