NEWCASTLE KZN: Author lifts the cover on literature on World Book Day

Lisa says nothing beats having a hard copy book in your hands.

Building the imagination and broadening the mind.

For local author, Lisa Perrins, the importance of books cannot be understated, particularly when considering the benefits reading offers to the youth.

“Books help with language, vocabulary and grammar,” she explained.

Lisa, who penned the romance novel Vir Altyd Joune in 2016, spoke to the Newcastle Advertiser ahead of World Book Day today (March 5).

For Lisa, reading is an escape from the daily troubles of life. She enjoys imagining the characters in a book and bringing them to life, citing South African crime novelist, Deon Meyer as being among her favourite authors.

“I enjoy following the story, trying to solve the crime on my own. American author, Nora Roberts inspires me because she has written more than 215 books. Jill Eileen Smith is an American Biblical fiction writer. Reading her work helps me to better understand what life was like during the Biblical era.”

Lisa agrees the printed book is a dying art form because electronics are taking over in the modern age and more people are switching to digital reading.

However, she says nothing beats having a hard copy in one’s hands.

For authors considering going the digital route, Lisa says it may be cheaper to publish electronically, but significant promotion and advertising are still required.

With a positive mindset however, anything is possible.

“Believe in yourself, in your work… Be motivated from the beginning in starting and finishing your book. Do thorough research about the background of your story and spend a sufficient amount of time developing your characters.”

Lisa’s top five books:

The Crimson Cord – Jill Eileen Smith: “It’s about Rahab from the Bible; a remarkable woman.”

Crocodile Burning – Michael Williams: “One of my prescribed books in school, which has always stayed with me.”

Whiskey Beach – Nora Roberts: “Her books in general are thoroughly researched and have good story-lines.”

Swartskaap – Odette Schoeman: “It is written in a relaxed and light manner, with a touch of humour.”

The Last Hunt – Deon Meyer: “Deon wrote more than 15 books before he got famous. It’s hard to believe because his books are page-turners.”
