DUNDEE KZN: At 80, bowler Hans proves that age is just a number

Hans started playing bowls around 35 years ago

The Club Handicap Singles Tournament saw another successful weekend of bowls. Nine ladies and 15 men did battle from Saturday, and some wonderful bowls was played by all.

A big shout out to Edwin Meyer for giving up his day to help Angus Miller in his wheelchair. The ladies’ section winners – Sylvia Malan, Elsie De Jager and Jo-Ann Melville – went through to Sunday’s final.

After nine hours of exciting bowls, the ladies’ Handicap Singles champion for 2021 was Sylvia Malan. In the men’s section, Ian de Jager, Oom Hans Vreken, Jacques Bierbaum, Greg Conolly and Willie Nel all went through to the play-offs. Again, some exciting bowls resulted in Oom Hans seeing off defending champion, Ian de Jager, and Jacques Bierbaum, to make it to the final. Greg beat Willie to face off against Oom Hans.

The eventual winner for 2021 was Greg. Hats off to Oom Hans who, at a sprightly 80 years of age, demonstrated that the years are not a handicap. I

t was way back in 2008 that Han was the Singles Champion and he still has that touch – and that’s not surprising as he has been rolling woods for an incredible 35 years! A special mention to Elsie for playing some exceptional bowls. Thanks to all for the support, the food once again, the camaraderie and the overall vibe in the club.
