VRYHEID KZN: Preparing for their most challenging expedition yet

So if you see them walking around town with their hiking gear, don't fret...

The Fish River Canyon hike in Namibia is not a ‘walk in the park’. This 90km hike takes place over a period of five days. As a hiker, you have to carry everything with you, including water. But it is one of the most breathtaking hikes in the world’s second largest canyon. This past weekend, a group of friends decided to test their hiking skills and equipment at Bivane Dam’s amazing hiking and quad routes.

They are planning to do the Fish River Canyon in August of this year and have had many discussions on equipment, what to take and what to leave. The most important essential is, of course, water and the hikers discovered an excellent portable lightweight water filtration kit which is a must to take on any hike. Next, of course, is food. Only night one will allow for a vacuum-sealed steak that you can sear over a small fire. For the rest of the time, you have to work with light but nutritious foods that can last for five days in a backpack. Sleeping arrangements will be either lightweight tents or under the stars, and a super lightweight hiking air mattress that hardly takes up any space at all.

This past weekend, the group packed up all their intended equipment – including cooking vessels, some food and a First Aid kit – and took on one of Bivane’s beautiful hiking routes. It was beautiful, hot, but so rewarding to be in a place where they could experience the awesomeness of nature all around them. Sleeping in little tents and on air mattresses with tired bodies definitely made the bits of sleep they got more rewarding. So if you see them walking around town with their hiking gear, don’t fret… they’re going back home again to soft beds and dreams of hiking the Fish River Canyon soon!
