ESTCOURT KZN: Mayor takes the lead at CBD clean-up campaign

"A zero litter campaign needs to be embraced and we must continue to keep Estcourt clean as part of a daily routine"

February 15 saw Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality conducting ‘Operation Mbo’ in the central business district (CBD).

This is a clean-up campaign that Mayor Jabulile Mbele and councillors were involved in.

Staff from various departments formed a single file and swept out the dirt in all the major streets in town, under the watchful eye of the mayor, who was in her cleaning gear.

The mayor, when asked why this huge operation was undertaken, said: “It is imperative to maintain the cleanliness and maintain a good physical appearance of public spaces, streets and parks for the protection of those using them.”

This massive clean-up campaign began on the 15th and ended on February 19, targeting Lorne Connor, Albert, Alexandra, Alfred and Phillip streets, Princess Park and the main taxi rank. Drains, gutters, grass and litter were part of the five-day mission.

At the close of this vibrant campaign, while clearing the dirt at the Estcourt Taxi Rank, Mrs Mbele – together with the chairperson of the portfolio committee on Community Services – urged vendors, taxi operators, shop owners and the general public to stop illegally dumping waste material everywhere, instead of using bins and containers, which are strategically placed near their places of operation.

She further committed to the collection of waste, according to the municipal schedule, and begged for a change of attitude among the residents of the local municipality.

In her closing remarks, she stressed the importance of throwing waste material into the right containers to avoid the outbreak of various infectious diseases.

“A zero litter campaign needs to be embraced and we must continue to keep Estcourt clean as part of a daily routine,” she added.
