VRYHEID KZN: Tourism still brave amid Alert Level 3

Among the issues discussed was the Klipfontein Bird Hide, which is inaccessible at this stage due to the road

Tourism all around the country has taken serious strain due to the pandemic. But this hasn’t deterred the local Tourism Committee from soldiering bravely forward in an attempt to attract potential visitors to Vryheid. On Wednesday (February 10), they held their first meeting of the year, which was not attended by many committee members due to other obligations. Nonetheless, it was a successful meeting, with a few projects having to be reviewed and moved to 2022 due to the current status of the country (Alert Level 3). There are also a few challenges regarding tourist attractions in the area. Among the issues discussed was the Klipfontein Bird Hide, which is inaccessible at this stage due to the road. The view from the hide itself is also obstructed by tall growing reeds. Honorary Ranger from Ezemvelo, Nico Strydom, explained that the fixing of the road will cost approximately R10,000. They are currently depending on donations to fix up the bird hide. Since birding has become very popular, especially among European tourists, this could lure overseas tourists to Vryheid. Another challenge that came to the table is that of the road leading up to Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve and parts of the road on top of the nature reserve that have been damaged by the recent heavy rains. Even though the honorary rangers renovated the picnic spot, it is impossible for visitors to access or enjoy the new picnic spot in the park. Unfortunately, all these projects are dependent on donations and the goodwill of different entities.
