VRYHEID KZN: Graves concerns about long queues at post office

, "The number of people who are supposed to be issued the R350 is 150 a day, but that is not the case because they come here in their numbers that far exceed the 150-limit.

The community of Vryheid has numerous complaints surrounding the long queues at the post office.

The concerns are about the issue of social distancing, the litter and also the smell of urine at the post office. A concerned citizen has complained about the crowds that have to queue outside the post office, with no masks on, and where there is not enough space for social distancing. “With all the safety rules in connection with Covid-19, I am sure that the filth and stench of urine by the post office cannot be conducive to our health and safety,” fumed the resident.

Sindy Manyathi, who is the branch manager at the post office, said, “We do realise that there are too many people who come to the post office, especially for the R350 grants. Last week Thursday and Friday, it was clean and there wasn’t much of a crowd here at the post office because the R350 grants were not issued on those days. Now it’s back to square one, because grants are being issued again this week.”

She continued that, “The number of people who are supposed to be issued the R350 is 150 a day, but that is not the case because they come here in their numbers that far exceed the 150-limit. Another thing is that people now sleep outside the post office premises; there is even a bedding mattress outside and the people have destroyed the garden. The lady who cleans at the post office constantly tries to keep the place spic-and-span, but once people come and queue, her work is in vain.”
