NEWCASTLE KZN: Municipality reduces Eskom debt by R38,3-million

Mayor of Newcastle, Dr. Ntuthuko Mahlaba says this indicates the upward trajectory of the municipality.

Newcastle Municipality is among five KwaZulu-Natal municipalities, which have been lauded by Eskom for honouring their substantial debts to the power utility.

In an Eskom media statement this week, Newcastle is credited for adhering to a payment agreement and reducing its arrears debt by R38,3-million. Also mentioned are Abaqulusi (Vryheid), Msunduzi (Pietermaritzburg), Inkosi Langalibalele (Estcourt area) and Mpofana (Mooi River area).

Eskom further thanked the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) for its support and leadership in facilitating negotiations between these municipalities and the power utility.

“There was a rocky start in negotiations with Newcastle and Mpofana Municipalities. However, the progress made shows a lot can be achieved with determination and alignment of focus, and Eskom thanks CoGTA for this,” read the statement.

Mayor of Newcastle, Dr. Ntuthuko Mahlaba said his administration had committed itself to honouring the payment agreement to Eskom and that obligation was indeed honoured.

He used this as an example of how seriously Newcastle Municipality takes service delivery and added he was pleased with the ‘upward trajectory’ the municipality was on.

“This year, we celebrate and commemorate 20 years of local government, and this is a great time to also celebrate the steps we’ve taken in turning our municipality around. We aim to become one of the best municipalities in the province of KZN. We thank our residents for constantly working with us.”
