VRYHEID KZN: Residents worried about their well-being

I feel very afraid for the kids with these potholes around.

People residing in the Emakwatas area of Vryheid are complaining about potholes and litter everywhere.

Emakwatas resident Ntombi Nkosi is worried about the environment she is living in. She says that ever since she moved to that area, there has been no change. “I have been living here since 2013 and it has always been like this. I only know that i am in ward 8, but I have never even seen the ward Councillor.” She continued by saying that the roads are a major problem in her area, as there are potholes that get bigger all the time. “The roads here make it hard for us to use. The potholes are the worst; you would swear someone might fall in and never come back!”.

She also mentioned the litter issue, which is bothersome.”People have created their own dumping site at the side of the road, It gets really dirty and smelly when there is rainfall, and the litter scatters everywhere.” She adds that lodging a complaint to the Municipality is a struggle on its own right, as they never seem to get any answers. “Just look at Still Street! I feel very afraid for the kids with these potholes around. If the Municipality could just fix our roads so they are in a good state, and also remove the dumping site next to the road. After that, they need to erect a notice stating that anyone who dumps their rubbish there will be prosecuted,” she concludes.

Ward Councillor Magda ViktorĀ  responded to this issue by saying, the community cannot create its own dumping site. “They should put their rubbbish in refuse bags; it will be collected. Rubbish cannot be collected if it is not in a garbage bags and is just scattered everywhere. Emakwatas in mainly the TransnetĀ  area, so the roads the Transnet’s responsibility. Last year I had to pressurize Transnet to put in a sewer system for the community, and they did,” commented Cllr Viktor.
