DUNDEE KZN: Stock thieves sentenced

"Crime does not pay... it may take some time to secure a conviction, but our office is positive that, by working smart, we can curb stock theft.

Two stock thieves, both with previous convictions, had their comeuppance when they were jailed. The long-running case was finally concluded last week in the Glencoe Magistrate’s Court after two years, during which time both Vusumandla Gabriel ‘Ntshongase’ Zulu and Phakamani Dube were in custody.

Both were found guilty of stealing cattle from Schroeder’s farm. Zulu was given a two-year prison sentence.

His conviction constituted a violation of parole on a previous sentence for stock theft, which the court sought to activate.

Dube was sentenced to 18 months after he was also found to have violated his parole conditions on a previous sentence.

The sentences handed down will not be served concurrently. Captain Amanda Bezuidenhout of the Glencoe Stock Theft Unit said, in welcoming the sentences: “Crime does not pay… it may take some time to secure a conviction, but our office is positive that, by working smart, we can curb stock theft.”
