The persistent summer rains, the Covid-19 pandemic impacting heavily on municipal personnel, and a surge in funerals have all contributed to a grave situation of poor maintenance at the Dundee cemeteries in Bulwer and Colley streets. Zakhele Mndaweni, manager of Environment and Waste at the municipality, said that his department had noted the concerns of the families.

“We agree that certain sections of our cemeteries are not in a condition that we are proud of. The recent summer rains have not made things easy for us in terms of general maintenance of our cemeteries.

Another factor that has made things very difficult for us is the recent outbreak of the second wave of the coronavirus, which has affected some of our staff members to the point where we lost two of our own.

“The municipality has a plan to deal with grass-cutting in the cemetery and all other areas that are our responsibility. There is a security guard available in our cemetery during the day, seven days a week.”
