VRYHEID KZN: Suspects arrested with liquor, before restrictions ease

The vehicle, with two occupants aged 33 and 35, was stopped and searched by the police officers

Two suspects were arrested for drinking in public and transporting liquor two weeks ago.  This after members of the Zululand District Task Team spotted a suspicious-looking Isuzu bakkie along the R66 near Mkhuze River. The vehicle, with two occupants aged 33 and 35, was stopped and searched by the police officers.  It was discovered that the occupants were drinking and transporting liquor from Pongola to Mashona.  Both suspects were arrested and charged in line with the Disaster Management Act, Lockdown Level 3. Following the speech made by the president, the restrictions on the sale of alcohol was eased.  The sale of alcohol by licensed premises for off-site consumption will be permitted from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 6pm.  Duty-fee shops, registered wineries, wine farms and micro-distilleries can now sell alcohol for off-consumption during normal licensed operating hours; premises for on-site consumption (such as restaurants and taverns) are permitted throughout the week from 10am to 10pm. “I want to call on all of us to drink responsibly so that we do not experience a spike in trauma cases or and increase in infections due to reckless behaviour,” said President Cyril Ramaphosa.
