NEWCASTLE KZN: Rifles and ammo recovered during Task Team operation in Madadeni

Three .303 rifles and 94 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the operation in Madadeni.

Three suspects are due in court today, as the SAPS Multi-district Task Team continues to clamp down on the illegal possession of guns and ammunition.

In a statement from the KwaZulu-Natal Office of the Provincial Commissioner, it was stated the task team followed information to Madadeni, Section 7 this morning and made four arrests.

The suspects are aged between 28 and 43 and were found in possession of three .303 rifles and 94 rounds of ammunition.

“They were questioned about the firearms and ammunition, but failed to provide proof of ownership and were arrested and detained in Madadeni. They are appearing before the Madadeni Magistrates Court today,” read the statement from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner.

A fourth .303 rifle was found abandoned in the Muden area, with the suspect nowhere to be seen. However, SAPS said the task team was still on the case and more arrests and recoveries were expected.

Acting KZN Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thulani Gonya welcomed the arrests and firearm recoveries, saying: “We are cleaning up the province and we would like to send a strong message to those who are in unlawful possession of firearms that we will be coming for them next.”
