NEWCASTLE KZN: Municipality to switch off power as Eskom announces Stage 3 load-shedding

Power will be switched off from 2pm today.

The Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit has issued an urgent notice in response to Eskom’s announcement of Stage 3 load-shedding.

Head of the unit, Mlungisi Khumalo confirmed load-shedding will begin from today (February 10) at 2pm until 6am tomorrow (February 11).

“The municipality will switch off power completely as per our zones schedule from 2pm today,” said Khumalo.

In a statement released on Eskom’s media platforms, the power utility said the load-shedding is necessary.

“The power generation system is still severely constrained due to high generation unit breakdowns during the past three days, as well as the need to replenish diminishing emergency generation reserves,” read the statement.

Eskom has admitted the outlook for the power system is ‘unpredictable’ and said there was a high probability of load-shedding continuing on Thursday (February 12).

“We will continue to assess and communicate promptly as the situation changes. This morning, a generation unit each at the Lethabo, Kendal and Duvha Power Stations were taken offline for repairs, adding to the high number of breakdowns and units that have failed to return to service as planned.” Eskom has requested that the public continue using electricity sparingly, as the system remains vulnerable and unpredictable.
