Ladysmith KZN: Flooding in lower CBD caused by heavy rains

Drone footage - Qedusizi Dam holds back floods

Heavy rainfall during the night caused flooding, with Qedusizi Dam holding back millions of litres of floodwater as it was designed to.

The flooding in Lyell Street and the taxi rank after last night’s (February 8) heavy rains was caused by blocked storm-water drainage.

The Klip River stayed below the flood plain, but it has come very close in places to bursting its banks.

It is clear that routinely required riverside maintenance is no longer being carried out by the municipality.

The de-silting and clean-up of the riverbanks forms part of the required flood-prevention maintenance. Without this crucial part of flood prevention, the R271-million Qedusizi Dam will not be able to prevent flooding.
