VRYHEID KZN: Yawning potholes about to ‘swallow’ the town

"We would like to assure our citizens that we are ready to continue with the work as soon as the weather clears."

Frustration levels rise as motorists have to swerve left and right to miss all the potholes that pockmark the road in town.  And the potholes themselves just seem to multiply and grow in size by the day. Mark and President streets are the worst at this stage, with the current condition of these roads being hazardous to say the least – accidents waiting to happen and quite capable of causing serious damage to a vehicle.  According to Municipal Manager Bonga Ntanzi, the fixing of potholes around town has been affected by the recent rains, leading to the municipality not being able to repair the road surface right away.  He continued by stating that the weather forecast continues to indicate that AbaQulusi will experience more rain during the first week of February.  “We have been working hand-in-hand with Cllrs Magda Viktor and Alta de Kock in addressing all the areas with potholes in town.  The municipality embarked on a project to fix potholes, but the work was disrupted because some of our employees were affected by Covid-19 and to add to that, the recent rains have put a serious damper on this project.  We understand the frustration that may come with such delays, but it would be fruitless to patch the potholes while we are still experiencing these continuous rains and it would be impossible for filler to hold on wet soil.  The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has indicated that we will be experiencing these rains for a few more days and it will only clear by Friday. “We would like to assure our citizens that we are ready to continue with the work as soon as the weather clears.  Additionally, we have set a budget of R2 million, which is inclusive of a consultant’s fee dedicated towards fixing President Street.  We are currently at the designing stage and we will soon be advertising a tender for the construction of this street.  While work on President Street is taking place, we will continue patching the potholes in other streets,” said Mr Ntanzi.
