NEWCASTLE KZN: Municipal task team working to restore streetlights

Newcastle Municipality has established a task team to urgently address streetlight outages.

Newcastle Municipality has given its recently-formed task team 3 to 6 weeks to resolve streetlight outages.

In a press statement from Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo this week, the municipality acknowledged the ‘frustrations of residents and the inconvenience caused by these disruptions’ and said it was working tirelessly with relevant parties – in particular fibre installation companies.

The municipality stated that during the process of trenching and fibre cable installation, a number of cable insulators were damaged by work teams. The Electrical Department has since established that streetlight disruptions are mostly the result of rainfall or live wires being exposed to water.

Acting Municipal Manager, Vish Govender said, “The constant power disruption of streetlights will be resolved and that’s a promise we want to commit ourselves to.”
