WEENEN KZN: Police uncover ‘chop shop’ – seven arrested

Further investigations revealed a graveyard of stolen vehicles in various stages of destruction

While on the hunt to find a stolen vehicle, the Vryheid Task Team was guided to the Nhlawe area in Weenen on January 27.

Investigations into a taxi that was reported missing in Vryheid, led the officers to discover more than they bargained for.

When police arrived at a workshop at 6am, they found a bakkie, which was reported stolen in Gauteng.

Further investigations revealed a graveyard of stolen vehicles in various stages of destruction.

“Inside the suspect’s workshop, the police found pieces of the stolen taxi, pieces of a vehicle that was hijacked in Colenso as well as pieces of other vehicles. A total of seven suspects aged between 30 and 68 were placed under arrest,” explained police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

Two suspects will be facing charges of theft of motor vehicle while the other five were charged for possession of a stolen property.

Police recover the shell of another suspected stolen vehicle.

“A few weeks ago, the Weenen police and the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police recovered a VW Polo in Sahlumbe area in Weenen. The suspects fled the scene upon seeing the police officers. The preliminary investigation conducted revealed that the vehicle was stolen in Mondlo,” added Captain Mbele.

The five suspects will appear in the Colenso Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of stolen property.
