NEWCASTLE KZN: Political task team lies in wait for councillor outside court

At this stage, it is uncertain why Cllr Nzuza was taken into custody.

IFP Councillor and member of the Newcastle Council’s Executive Committee (Exco) in the finance portfolio, Thami Nzuza, was escorted into an unmarked police vehicle by members of the Political Task Team this morning.

Nzuza was exiting Madadeni Court in the company of his attorney, Mr TJ Mphela, after appearing for another case when he was unexpectedly put into handcuffs before he could reach his vehicle.

Members of the ANC, including former Regional Chairperson, Arthur Zwane, were present to witness the spectacle. Sources indicated that Zwane also appeared in court this morning.

It is uncertain why Cllr Nzuza was taken into custody, if he was arrested or if he was just taken in for questioning and what the matter pertains to, at this stage. Unofficial sources speculate that Cllr Nzuza’s detainment may have to do with a 2016 case involving the bombing of a man’s home.

Mr Mphela said he was unaware of what was happening or why Cllr Nzuza was taken into custody and asked to be allowed some time to determine what was going on and if his client wished to comment.
