Ladysmith KZN: Officers make arrests for carjacking

The so-called victims of the car crash turned out to be criminals, who pulled out guns and hijacked the Good Samaritans’ vehicle

Ladysmith Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) officers recently arrested suspects for carjacking.

It is alleged that in July 2020, victims were robbed of their vehicle on the Winterton road after they noticed an overturned vehicle at the side of the road.

The Good Samaritans stopped their vehicle with the intention of helping out. However, the so-called victims of the car crash turned out to be criminals. They pulled out guns and hijacked the Good Samaritans’ vehicle.

A case was opened and registered with Winterton SAPS. The case docket was transferred to the Ladysmith Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU), where it was investigated.

It came to light that the overturned vehicle was hijacked in Gauteng.

Police arrested a 25-year-old male after he was found driving another hijacked vehicle (not the hijacking on the Winterton road) in the Weenen area. This suspect gave police information that led to the arrest of a suspect in Johannesburg (who was involved in the Winterton road hijacking). The latter was detained there, since he has been involved in many hijackings in Gauteng and surrounding areas.

On Monday (January 11), VCIU members arrested a second 25-year-old suspect in Estcourt.

He was detained in the Ladysmith SAPS holding cells and will be appearing in the Colenso Magistrate’s Court soon for a bail application.
