NEWCASTLE KZN: Municipal public facilities closed under lockdown

Staff are working on rotation and essential services are not expected to be affected by the lockdown.

Newcastle Municipality has announced that all libraries, halls, art galleries, museums and swimming pools are closed until January 15, as the country returns to Level 3 of the national lockdown.

In a press statement, Head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo stated municipal staff were alternating to avoid office overcrowding but essential services staff – water services, electricity, community services and more – would work at all times.

“Service delivery will not be delayed nor postponed. The municipality reserves the right to temporarily close certain departments depending on the spread of the virus among employees.”

Amid a second wave of the coronavirus, Khumalo urged residents to use electronic means to access municipal services,  including making online account payments.

“Newcastle Municipality will abide and comply with all safety protocols, with the aim of safeguarding lives. [Residents should] follow all COVID-19 regulations so that we can stop the spread of this deadly virus. We further appreciate your cooperation.”
